User Rating Mar 02, 2011
By Big Daddy After purchasing this tool, I compared it to my standard ODB II hand held scanner with much success. Not only does it have all of the funtions of the moderately to expensive hand held scanners found in most auto parts stores, it also allows for live date collection at a fraction of the price. Having a laptop or equivelant is neccessary when using the SX SCAN Tool, allowing for data collection and storage. I was able to view live parameters and see real time changes other scanners can't see.

Differences between this and a handheld. Jul 31, 2011

For any scan tool, there are 2 things:
1) The connector that fits into the OBD port on your car. 2) The interface that reads and reports the codes coming from your vehicle.
For this item, a PC is required for #2. That's exactly what I wanted. I didn't want a little hand held unit that I had to scroll line by line to see all the codes and then possibly have to go look up code values to see what it was telling me.
The software that comes with the unit has lots of features, but is still a bit basic. However, for anyone that's just looking to reset trouble codes, etc, it's just fine.
The big benefit of this unit is data logging. You can set whatever parameters you want and then set the software to log it while you're driving. You would spend WAY more for a handheld unit that did data logging.
If you want more analysis tools, then you can buy better software that will use the unit to collect data.
I had no problems installing the drivers and software needed to make everything work. SUPER simple, and I was reading the output of it on my cars within 30 minutes.

For the price of a basic code reader you get an excellent scan tool with many features. You can also upgrade to the professional version on the manufacturers website for an additional fee.

Fast customer service Oct 22, 2011
By luckytii7 Easy product to work with and does as it should. plain and simple
Customer service on the other hand I'm very impressed with - I recently had to wipe my hard drive and everything on it so in turn the OBZwiz software was gone. After reinstalling the software I searched high and low for the activation code - no luck. One request to scantool with a copy of my invoice and within 5 minutes I had a new one at 8pm. Thanks Scantool!

This is the one! Sep 10, 2011

Finding the right product to access and analyze OBD data from your car is tricky, at best. After a LOT of research, this is where I placed my bet. I broke the house on this one! The module functions perfectly with my 1998 Mercury Sable LS Wagon. I combined this with a USB 2 cord extender USB 2.0 Active Extension / Repeater Cable A Male to A Female (10 Meters) to be able to read my OBD data from my office PC while my car was running outside of my back door. This is an invaluable tool and could save you hundreds of dollars in diagnosis and repairs by shops that simply use an industrial version of products like this and charge you a bundle to recoup their investment. The software to read this data is fairly simple, but very easy to use. I felt no need to buy more expensive software solutions for this unit (there are many choices available that will work with this product). The ability to read error codes and in many cases RESET them is beyond value :)
If you're reasonably confident in your ability to use the data this product can provide for you, then invest with confidence. Do your research first to establish that your car has the proper OBD interface (most cars made after 1995 do) and that this unit is compatible with your make and model (it probably is). If it is, buy this, you won't be disappointed!
